Implicit Modelling with Skeleton Curves: Controlled Blending in Contact Situations

چکیده
Interactive implicit modelling with complex skeletons was recently improved with the introduction of primitives de ned at di erent LODs. These implicit primitives use a subdivision curve as a skeleton. In this paper an extension to this representation is presented, in order to make it suitable for the interactive modelling and animation of soft objects in contact situations. The rst contribution improves the display method for subdivision-based implicit primitives; this uses an adaptive polygonisation which locally re nes, where necessary, according to the currently selected LOD. The second contribution consists of a new method for preventing unwanted blending when a skeleton-curve folds back onto itself. The third introduces local deformations where surfaces that should not blend come into contact. We illustrate the bene ts of this methodology by describing two applications: the interactive modelling of complex organic shapes in contact situations and the physically-based animation of such organic shapes.

Implicit Blending Revisited
Blending is both the strength and the weakness of functionally based implicit surfaces (such as F-reps or softobjects). While it gives them the unique ability to smoothly merge into a single, arbitrary shape, it makes implicit modelling hard to control since implicit surfaces blend at a distance, in a way that heavily depends on the slope of the field functions that define them. This paper pres...
متن کاملBlending Implicit Shapes Using Fuzzy Set Operations
Implicit modelling is a powerful technique to design geometric shapes, where a geometric object is described by a real function. In general, the real functions used in implicit modelling are unbounded and can take any values in space R. In general, the shapes described by different level sets of an unbounded implicit function can be varied significantly and are very unpredictable. In addition, ...
متن کاملEmbedded Implicit Stand-Ins for Animated Meshes: A Case of Hybrid Modelling
In this paper we address shape modelling problems, encountered in computer animation and computer games development that are difficult to solve just using polygonal meshes. Our approach is based on a hybrid modelling concept that combines polygonal meshes with implicit surfaces. A hybrid model consists of an animated polygonal mesh and an approximation of this mesh by a convolution surface stan...
متن کاملControlled Blending of Procedural Implicit Surfaces
Implicit surfaces are becoming increasingly popular in geometric modeling. Procedurally defined implicit surfaces, in particular surfaces built around skeletons, provide an intuitive representation for many natural objects, and objects commonly used in geometric modeling. This paper presents several techniques that provide good control over the way different skeletally defined implicit surfaces...
